the motomia enzos conquer the West Coast & Cederberg

During the weekend of 2 - 4 April 2010 we decided that it was time to unleash the Motomias again for another test. This time we wanted to see how well they would do off-road, especially in the sandy conditions of the West Coast and Cederberg mountains.

On Friday afternoon we left Stellenbosch with our two Motomia Enzos, fully loaded with camping gear, food and water for the next three days. We wanted to be self-sufficient as we were planning on tackling the West Coast without a predetermined schedule and wanted to be flexible. As we set off, it took some time to get used to the small 125cc's again, but it only takes a while to realise that these Enzos deserve a lot of respect!

On Friday we travelled through Malmesbury on towards Vredenburg and Paternoster. We decided to take a connecting gravel road between Paternoster and Saldanah Bay and here we discovered an open off-road biking park. Francois had fun testing out his Motomia's off-road capabilities and some folk with quad bikes stared at us in amazement.

That night we spent the evening in an over-crowded camping facility in Velddrif. With too much Boere music in the background we went to sleep and as we didn't pack the tent we got another few stares. Our next door neighbour kindly offered us the comfort of their front lawn and so we had a great night under the stars.

On Saturday morning we met some wonderful Capetonians in Elands Bay, sisters Dominique and Gabrielle. Dominique will be attempting a round-the-world tour on her Vespa at the end of the year and we chat excitedly about her trip while having breakfast. After a few more gravel roads we passed through Clan William to conquer the Cederberg. That afternoon we attempted the Wupperthal pass towards Eselbank with the Enzos. The fun started as we realised that these motomias could handle even this. We had a few laughs going through sandy patches and finally arrived at a camp site in the Cederberg just as it got dark.

Again we slept under the stars and the next day we met some great people who came to check out the bikes. Imagine their surprise when they realised we were not two "laaities" riding their GS's but one was a woman AND it was 125cc motorbikes. On Sunday we continued all the way through the Cederberg mountains, stopping at Mount Ceder for a 5-star breakfast. It was all over too soon, but again we were amazed at what these bikes could do. Again no problems and such an awesome trip!
